Mount Cameroon Inga Project has to do with introducing the Inga alley cropping system to
communities found on the slopes of Mount Cameroon which is the highest peak in West and
Central Africa (4095 m above sea level and only active Volcano.
The slash and burn agricultural practice is very common in these communities alongside
shifting cultivation triggered by soil fertility issues. The project seeks to take advantage of
the numerous benefits presented by Inga Alley Cropping among which are, erosion control,
natural/organic fertilization, simplicity of application, source of fuel wood and efficient
herbs/pest control. Being a sloppy landscape subject to high levels of precipitation, soil
erosion and other related effects are a constant cause for concern to farmers in this region.
The project shall involve the establishment on Inga seeds nurseries in Beneficiary
communities accompanied by training and subsequent planting of Inga trees in farms. The
project shall benefit 3 villages of the Mount Cameroon Forest Region for a start with the
planting of 6000 trees and involve 30 farmers with 10 selected from each beneficiary
village. The villages of Woteke, Naanga and Bwassa shall each be allocated 2000 Inga tree
seedlings.
